The history of the
Curly Coated Retriever breed

The Curly Coated Retriever breed was the first among similar breeds to be registered with the English Kennel Club. They descend from setters and English water spaniels. Later, Irish water spaniel bloodlines were added, as well as those of the extinct St. John's Newfoundland breed, ancestors of modern Newfoundland dogs. In the latter half of the 19th century, poodle bloodlines were also introduced to improve coat quality.

The first curly-coated retriever was exhibited in England in 1860. The breed club was founded in 1896, and the first standard was adopted in 1913. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in the same year.

After World War I, the number of dogs of this breed in Great Britain noticeably decreased due to their use in military activities. By the 1940s, the number of dogs increased again, but during World War II, there was another decline in the population of the breed.
